🪥 SmileSnack Tip #34
“Before & After a Wisdom Tooth Extraction (Yes, It Matters)”
Hi everyone… I’m back. 💛
And today we’re talking about something many of you will go through at some point a wisdom tooth (third molar) extraction.
Let’s walk through this gently.
🌿 Before the Extraction
🍽️ Eat beforehand (if you’re not being sedated).
If your dentist says it’s okay, have a light meal before your appointment. You may not feel like eating right after.
💊 Pain control planning matters.
Some dentists may recommend taking a pain reliever before the procedure but always ask.
⚠️ Very important:
Always tell your dentist about any painkillers you’ve taken before your appointment.
Some medications (like aspirin) can increase bleeding. Your dentist needs to know.
🌿 After the Extraction
🩸 Protect the clot.
That little blood clot forming in the socket is your body’s natural bandage.
No straws. No aggressive spitting. No smoking.
🧊 Ice helps.
20 minutes on, 20 minutes off during the first and second day reduces swelling.
🍲 Soft foods only.
Yogurt, mashed potatoes, soups (not too hot), smoothies (no straw).
Avoid crunchy, spicy, or small seeds.
🪥 Brush gently.
Avoid the extraction site the first day. After 24 hours, warm saltwater rinses help.
😶 Don’t talk too much the first few hours.
Your mouth just went through a procedure, let it rest.
Less talking = less irritation and better clot stability.
🏋️♀️ No exercise or heavy lifting for a few days.
Increased heart rate and sweating can raise blood pressure and trigger bleeding.
Let your body stay calm while it heals.
😅 Try not to sweat.
Anything that overheats your body too soon can disturb healing.
🛏️ Sleep slightly elevated.
Use two pillows so your head is slightly above heart level.
This helps reduce pressure and prevent bleeding overnight.
💊 Take medications as prescribed.
Stay ahead of discomfort, don’t wait until pain becomes intense.
Healing isn’t about being brave.
It’s about being careful.
And remember, if pain increases after day 3, or you notice bad taste or odor, call your dentist. Healing should improve, not worsen.
💛 Your smile deserves patience.
