SmileSnack #35
Scared of the Numbing? Let’s Talk About It.”
If you’re nervous about the numbing shot at the dentist… you are not dramatic. You are human. 💛
For many patients, it’s not the procedure they fear, it’s that small moment before the anesthetic. The anticipation. The “what if.”
Let me tell you something honestly:
Even I get a little nervous around injections sometimes. 😅
But I remind myself, it’s quick, it’s controlled, and it’s there to protect me.
Here’s a way to think about it differently:
Think of numbing like getting blood work but in reverse.
Instead of taking something out, we’re placing something in… so you don’t feel pain.
It’s not there to hurt you.
It’s there to make everything else comfortable.
What Actually Happens
✨ The area is dried and numbing gel is placed first.
That topical gel helps reduce the sensation before the injection.
And here’s something important:
If your dentist doesn’t automatically use it, you can absolutely ask for it. It may help you feel more comfortable.
And NO, this is not just for kids.
If you’re anxious, it’s completely okay to request it. Your comfort matters.
✨ The injection itself takes just a few seconds.
✨ The pressure you feel is normal, sharp pain is not.
Modern dental needles are very fine and designed to minimize discomfort. Most of what people fear is anticipation, not the actual sensation.
How to Make It Easier
🫶 1. Say it out loud.
Tell your dentist you’re nervous. We adjust. We slow down. We guide you through it.
😮💨 2. Control your breathing.
Inhale for 4, exhale for 4. Slow breathing lowers your heart rate and calms your body.
🎧 3. Bring headphones.
Music or a podcast gives your brain something else to focus on.
👀 4. Don’t watch.
Close your eyes. I personally think about something completely unrelated, a song, dinner plans, a memory. Redirecting your thoughts really works.
The numbing isn’t the scary part.
It’s the part that makes everything else painless.
And once it’s done? You’ll usually say what I hear all the time:
“That was it?”
💛 Mini Challenge:
If fear of the injection has been keeping you from booking an appointment, consider this your gentle sign. Fear gets smaller when we understand it.

Let’s be honest, after a long day of being a busy human, the last thing any of us wants to do is stand in front of a cold bathroom mirror and perform “string gymnastics” in our mouths.
